Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko appeared to be on the verge of leaving the club in the summer, but he has ended up staying and has been a crucial part of the campaign.

The midfielder was brought in from Newcastle entered for a then-club record fee of £ 30 million. His signing on transfer deadline day was seen something of an urgency from the club in order to increase the squad strength, but it certainly did not work out as expected. Sissoko struggled throughout the campaign and was relegated to the position of being an impact substitute towards the end of the campaign.

There were a lot of transfer rumours linking him with a return to French Ligue 1 with a number of clubs showing interest – including Marseille. However, the midfielder decided to stay in North London despite this being a World Cup year. French national team boss Didier Deschamps is someone who tries to prefer players who play regularly for their club teams. Hence, it was a major gamble from Sissoko to remain at Tottenham.

The decision to stay at the club appears to have been rewarded as the midfielder has been going through a contrasting campaign. He has already featured in more than 300 minutes of football while he only managed 900 minutes in the entirety of the 2016-17 season.

“We thought about it [leaving] at the end of last season with my agent, and we decided that the best thing was to stay here with a year to go to the World Cup. Even if I didn't play too much last season, I'm not the first nor the last player to have a difficult first season at a new club. And we thought everything was in place for me to flourish at Tottenham. Today, I tell myself, of course, that it was the right choice,” said Sissoko.
